Poptop lift support project info

OK, you can check the pics of my installation in the album section
under "lift support system".
(Aquí)
Gas Shock Lift Assist for pop-top

Here are the details of the installation:

Make/yr:'99 EVMV weekender

Gas springs (2): 35.20" extension, 20.30" compressed, giving 15"
stroke. Model AVM SE 1500 80 pound lift

Brackets (4):AH 16340 ZN
Brackets and springs ordered from austinhardware.com and cost
including shipping was $68.00 very helpful, shipped quickly!!!They
also have a free desing service if you wish to send them your
application info (AVMinc also will help design). I designed mine
myself using some of the info found in the links below.

Here are some links on parts, design info, etc. to help you:

http://www.avminc.com/technical/
http://austinhardware.com/dept.asp?dept%5Fid=359
http://www.spdhardware.com/index2.htm

I used stainless steel carriage bolts (4) for the top attachment and
used rubber washers (silicone will do) through the top. Steel cutting
screws attach the fixed end to the sheet metal. Clearance for the top,
canvas and bed was not a problem, but needs to be considered for your
application.

Important things to keep in mind: make sure that you attach the spring
in fully extended position and top completely open otherwise you'll
never get it open! Make sure when fully closed, the spring is not
allowed to be pushed past its' compressed state, otherwise you'll not
be able to close the top or could damage your spring. Chose the spot
to attach the fixed (lower) arm in such a way as to allow about 40-45
degrees when opened, much steeper and the lift becomes quite strong.
See the pics to get an idea of where I placed mine. The fixed end
(lower) is just ahead of the scissors hinge and when extended is about
43 degrees and a lift height of about 25 inches giving a verticle
force of approximately 56# each (112# total). I crudely measured the
weight of the top at midpoint to be ~90#+-

Good luck and needless to say, I am very happy with the results of
this fun project and happy to share it with you. BTW, I didn't do this
because I am a weakling or anthing (hah), but I found that with the
top bed in place, my camping gear behind the front seat, I just had a
devil of a time getting the proper leverage to lift the top without
major effort! Now my wife can do it one handed, sitting in the
driver's seat! Cool!
